COSM v1 — Codex of Ottoman Scientific Manuscripts
15th–17th centuries; Mathematics, Astronomy, Medicine and Natural Sciences
Project code: DTCH-FND-2026-C001
COSM is a codex programme that develops fifteenth- to seventeenth-century Ottoman Turkish scientific manuscripts as TEI-based digital editions. It brings together the text, witness information, and editorial decisions within the same publication architecture, thereby reconstituting scientific manuscripts as traceable and sustainable research objects.
COSM transforms manuscripts in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and natural sciences into digital editions within a shared framework of schema, documentation, and versioning. Each edition makes the textual witnesses and editorial interventions clearly visible, allowing the texts to circulate as documented and reusable research components. The programme creates the conditions for the gradual incorporation of new texts, the comparative management of editions, and the development of systematic lines of research across Ottoman scientific manuscripts. The mathematics and astronomy component of COSM will be shaped on the basis of the data and methodological framework developed within Dr Kalafat’s MSCA-PF project.
